Title: Peninsula Paddle
When: 03.06.2012
Location: Cape Town
Description: This year’s Peninsula Paddle takes place on Sunday 3 June 2012

Once again we intend to use the mantra that we used on the very first paddle: ‘Take back the City’s waterways’. It’s a plea to change the way in which our waterways are being treated. Waterways know no boundaries – what happens on the land ends up in our waterways.

This year is particular important because we will be able to highlight the work of the City’s ‘Kadar Asmal Project’ which has been tasked with cleaning rivers and is also a job creation initiative. We’d like to think that the Peninsula Paddle has been instrumental in getting this initiative running, but we also need to see that attention is focused on this work to help sustain the effort. Media attention does help.

We invite you to participate and also to invite your friends to join you! We need a large armada of crafts to pitch up to the start (paddle Zandvlei and/or Princess Vlei); paddle the Black River from Rondebosch Golf course, and up the Riet River in Milnerton to our final destination. These stretches present excellent photo opportunities.

It’s fun to think we can take to the waterways and paddle from the Indian to the Atlantic in one day, and with good camaraderie along route.

If you would like to participate in the 2012 event – as a paddler, sponsor or supporter – email catherine@wessa.co.za.

How do I get involved as a paddler?
* Book Sunday 3 June
* Get your kayak ready
* Do a little fitness training – but not too much or else we won’t be able to keep up with you!
* Read the adjacent “Route map and description” and the “Information for Participants”
* Complete the adjacent Paddler Registration Form prior to the event and e-mail it to us

Of course we’d like you to paddle the whole distance, but whether you choose to do the whole route or just a short section, it all helps to draw attention to the condition of the City’s waterways.

The Peninsula Paddle is a result of collaboration between various partners including Friends of the Liesbeek, Zandvlei Trust, AfriOceans, BEN (Bicycling Empowerment Network), Dressing the Princess Project, Gravity Adventures, the City of Cape Town’s WasteWise programme and WESSA.
