Having previously made headlines for their industry-leading water conservation efforts, the hotel is once again pioneering environmental sustainability and responsibility, having received the ECO Proud/ECO Excellent Status Award.
As part of the Dream Hotels & Resorts group, The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel is the first recipient of the award after the implementation of a group-wide initiative across the group’s 22 properties in South Africa and Mozambique.
The hotel and the group at large have committed themselves to initiatives that are in line with South Africa’s official pledge to reduce emissions to between 398-614 million tons (Mt) of CO2 between years 2025 and 2030, further dropping to between 212Mt-420Mt by 2050.
“With sustainable travel at an all-time high, it is imperative that industry players not only follow suit, but rather drive this initiative,” says Nick Dickson, Dream Hotels & Resorts (DHR) Director.
The initiative was spearheaded with the appointment of environmental expert consultants, Energy Resource Optimisers (ERO), to develop its Sustainable Environmental Management Programme (SEMP).
Based on a ‘PLAN – DO – CHECK – ACT’ model, the SEMP is easy to understand and implement at every level, with two pillars, a facility and an organisational programme.
“The facility programme deals with all things sustainable involving waste, water and energy, with the aim to move to the most efficient equipment over time. The organisational programme, meanwhile, addresses the group’s policies, procedures and operations,” says General Manager of The Peninsula All-Suite Hotel, Chris Godenir.
“The Peninsula is proud to be the recipient of the ECO rating and will continue its drive to becoming an eco-champion and an example to other organisations,” concludes Godenir.
