In countries around the world, we are seeing a shift in how energy is generated – from what, by whom, as well as how it is distributed and consumed. And changes in the structure of electrical power distribution are resulting in changes in social, political and economic power too, presenting opportunities to promote greater democracy and equity through this transformation.
Here in South Africa, Eskom’s enduring dominance and nuclear future are being challenged from the ground up by decentralised renewable energy generation.
But… where is this leading? Who will benefit? We require bold citizen-led answers…
