Transforming SA’s energy future
January 26, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pmRand55
Who has the power to transform South Africa’s energy future?
In countries around the world, we are seeing a shift in how energy is generated – from what, by whom, as well as how it is distributed and consumed. And changes in the structure of electrical power distribution are resulting in changes in social, political and economic power too, presenting opportunities to promote greater democracy and equity through this transformation.
Here in South Africa, Eskom’s enduring dominance and nuclear future are being challenged from the ground up by decentralised renewable energy generation.
But… where is this leading? Who will benefit? We require bold citizen-led answers…
January’s thought leader: Lauren Hermanus
Lauren is a Sustainable Development Specialist focused on urban resilience and energy innovation. Her experience is in policy, strategy and programme development in both the public and private sectors. Lauren’s approach is to apply Complexity Thinking to better understand and address developmental challenges.
Lauren is the Strategic Director of Massive Small – a not-for-profit focused on urban, bottom-up, democratic sustainable development. Massive Small connects a global
network of urbanists to imagine these new futures together.
