Woolworths introduced a series of Limited Edition ‘Bags for Good’ reusable shopping bags to help raise awareness and funds to aid conservation efforts to help save Africa’s most endangered species. To date, Woolworths has contributed close to R3 million to efforts to save the rhino, cheetah, African painted dog and vultures, all thanks to customers’ support of these Limited Edition bags.
For every one of the bags sold, Woolworths has donated R10 to the conservation efforts by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) South Africa, Wildlife ACT Fund and The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) for the 4 species. “We are very grateful to our customers for the support they’ve shown for our ‘Bags for Good’ reusable bags,” says Justin Smith, Woolworths Good Business Journey manager. “Since the launch of the first rhino bag in 2010, we’ve donated over R1.6 million to rhino conservation, and some R 1.3 million has gone towards conservation of cheetahs African painted dogs and Vultures.”
In partnership with Two Oceans Aquarium the latest ‘My Ocean Promise’ bag emphasises that the future of the African penguin and turtle depends on us changing our behaviour on land. The bag calls customers to make a promise to conserve the life that depends on healthy oceans. With the sale of each bag, R10 (VAT inclusive) will be donated to SANCCOB to support seabird conservation.
In addition to benefiting conservation efforts, these bags are contributing to Woolworths Good Business Journey in two other ways. They’re manufactured by one of the small enterprise development companies Woolies works with and contribute to reducing the number of plastic bags customers are buying.
Buying a Limited Edition bag is not the only way that Woolworths customers can help protect our endangered species. Through the MyPlanet programme, customers have the opportunity to support a worthy environmental cause close to their heart, without costing them a cent. To date, customers have helped raise over R400 000 for the EWT MyPlanet Rhino Fund, a dedicated MyPlanet fund committed towards rhino conservation.
