Gauteng and other parts of the country will experience heatwave conditions on Thursday, the SA Weather Service has warned.
Temperatures in Pretoria are expected to reach 38°C and Johannesburg will experience temperatures of between 33 and 35°C.
The SA Weather Service issued an alert for extreme temperatures and high discomfort levels.
The high temperatures will extend to parts of the North West and Northern Cape, where temperatures of up to 42°C are forecast.
Beeld reported on Thursday that the heatwave conditions are expected to last until the weekend, with showers forecast for Sunday. A forecaster at the SA Weather Service explained that the heatwave was caused by a high pressure system which causes air to move down rather than up.
There were also warnings of possible wildfires in the Northern Cape and Western Cape.
ER24 paramedics issued a heatwave safety checklist, suggesting that residents stay well hydrated even if not thirsty, avoid wearing tight clothing, and postpone strenuous outdoor activities.
