There is an opportunity for aspiring young environmentalists to share ideas and exchange experiences with youth from 19 countries during a weeklong study trip to Germany.
The Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) programme, now in its fifth year in South Africa, has launched for 2012. This is a global project of the partnership between Bayer and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the area of youth and environment.
The programme is an opportunity for aspiring environmentalists to share ideas and exchange experiences with youth from 19 countries. This will take place during a weeklong study trip to Germany from 04 to 09 November 2012, and R5 000 will be awarded towards the winners’ environmental projects.

“As South Africa focuses on the youth and the environment in June, we wish to create environmental awareness among children and encourage them to take ownership and protect their environment. We therefore encourage youth leaders with a passion for the environment to take advantage of this prospect and make a difference in their communities,” said Bayer Southern Africa Chief Executive Officer, Bjoern Skogum. This global initiative forms an integral part of our sustainable development objectives.
Youth between the ages of 18 and 24 who are actively involved in environmental activities are invited to submit a summary of their projects in English. Describe how the project has or is addressing any environmental challenges, for example sustainable agriculture, water conservation, waste management, energy efficiency and climate change.

environmental envoys share insights
The Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Program was launched in Asia in 1998 and is one of the key elements of the Bayer-UNEP Partnership. The program focuses primarily on the world’s fast-growing emerging economies. Originally introduced in Thailand, the concept was subsequently extended to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Venezuela and Vietnam.
The study trip gives young people an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the principles and application of modern environmental protection in Germany. When the Environmental Envoys return home, they are able to raise awareness of sustainable development in their own societies by passing on the impressions, experience and insights they have gained. Many former participants in this Bayer initiative now have jobs where they play a key role in environmental protection in their home countries.

Bayer is the first company in the world to enter a long-term partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the area of youth and the environment. This cooperation focuses on children and young people from all over the world who are interested in environmental issues and committed to protecting the world around them.
The partners’ joint aim is to support young people in their commitment to the environment, to expand their knowledge of the environment and to foster the global exchange of experience by building up networks. For this purpose, Bayer and UNEP organize a dozen environmental projects for children and young people around the world every year. The partnership was renewed in 2010 for another 3-year period until the end of 2013. So far, more than two million young people have participated in these projects and thus benefited directly from this unique partnership.
