The Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) has challenged a decision by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) to refuse access to crucial climate change data for several of South Africa’s largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters. The data to which DEFF refused the CER access include key (GHG) emission data and emissions reductions plans for heavy polluters … [Read more...]

Fossil fuel divestment: will UCT finally heed the call?

December 8, 2019 Leave a Comment

It is now six years since Fossil Free SA first called on the University of Cape Town (UCT) to phase out all investments in climate-destroying fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. In those six years, the global fossil fuel divestment movement has grown from a handful of institutions to well over a thousand, including New York, Paris, London, our own city of Cape Town; a whole … [Read more...]

As students contemplate their next step in their careers in 2020, the energy sector offers current and future employment opportunities, as South Africa renews its efforts to create alternative energy sources (renewables) and better manage current energy production (coal-fired). This is the opinion of Barry Bredenkamp, General Manager for Energy Efficiency at the South … [Read more...]

In the wake of a new bout of load-shedding, the long-overdue Integrated Resource Plan for Electricity (IRP) was finally published for implementation today – following nearly a year of deliberations, behind closed doors, at the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC). The Life After Coal Campaign (LAC) and Greenpeace Africa (GP) are appalled to note that the … [Read more...]

Coal power: 50% less jobs, 1000 times more destruction

August 15, 2019 1 Comment

As our new Minister of Mineral and Energy Resources fights to keep our economy in the dark ages, aided and abetted by a media sector credulous enough to repeat ‘clean coal’ rhetoric,* it’s worth trying to get a sense of the full damage being done. As a Minister, his duty is to a Constitution that aims to extend the human and socio-economic rights of all South Africans; but his … [Read more...]

Clean air a basic human right, not a luxury

June 5, 2019 Leave a Comment

This World Environment Day we face the reality that more than 9 out of 10 people globally are breathing unsafe air. “Clean air isn’t a luxury; it’s a basic human right. It’s not acceptable that so many people around the world are being forced to breathe polluted, toxic air. More and more people are having to deal with the terrible health impacts and they’ve had enough – … [Read more...]

Hiding incidents at Koeberg is a problem for public safety

April 11, 2019 1 Comment

According to the Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute (SAFCEI), the recent revelations by Minister Pravin Gordhan that three separate safety ‘incidents’ had occurred at Koeberg Power Station in 2014 and 2015, should raise a red flag for South African citizens. Not only is the executive decision to keep the public in the dark about these incidents … [Read more...]

Trevor Hardaker - wildlife enthusiast and photographer

So, I've been playing around a little with the Canon R6 and 600mm F11 RF lens mirrorless combination recently. And, because I am so involved with rarities, it made sense that I should probably test it out on them... after all, that's what many birders are going to expect from me...😉

And what better subject to start with than the mega Crested Honey Buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus) that has been hanging around at Spanish Farm in Somerset West...! Originally found about 2,5 weeks ago, it took a little while, in discussion with a number of experts across the world, to finally pin down the ID, but this is the first record of this species in Southern Africa and one of not all that many for sub-Saharan Africa! So a very worthy subject indeed to test the camera on!

I still need to get used to this combination and put it through some proper birder tests, but am fairly happy with the results I was able to achieve here even without knowing the camera all that well...😀
