Environmental activists will be holding a funeral for the entire planet in Cape Town on Saturday from 11:00 to 13:00.
Extinction Rebellion South Africa invites you to join for a symbolic Funeral for the Earth to mark the loss of life our planet has, is, and will experience due to climate breakdown.
This will be our chance to express our grief and sadness at the harm being done to our planet, and to mourn the species that we have already lost to extinction.
We will walk in funeral procession from St George’s Cathedral (Wale Street), carrying a fake coffin to symbolize the death of life on Earth as we know it. Our route will take us into the Company’s Gardens where we will stop for songs, poetry and speeches.
Please come dressed in black, or dark colours, for mourning.
Funeral for the Earth is being hosted as an event for contemplation and remembrance of all the species that have already been lost and the existential threat facing life on earth through human activity.
We remember what is already gone and mourn the destruction of life on Earth by the toxic system that places material wealth above all other values.
The South African chapter of Extinction Rebellion has a key mission in working towards transformation for the healing of the life supporting biosphere.
We also remember the loss of habitats of many species and the loss and exploitation of traditional lands of indiginous peoples across the planet.
Demand that the South African Government declare a state of climate crisis with regards to the Climate Breakdown and
Ecological Collapse posing an existential threat to all of humanity and 98% of all species on earth.
Demand Zero Emissions by 2025 in alignment with global movements to end fossil fuel usage a renewable energy budget that will meet these demands.
Demand a participatory democracy to ensure participation in the effective implementation of a sustainable future.
