Learners at City Kids Pre – and Primary School in Johannesburg were gifted 15 double – seater school desks made from recycled plastic pledged by Extrupet, PETCO and AKRARA as part of the Joburg City Clean – up earlier this year.
The 15 double – seater desks, manufactured by Extruwood, weigh 68kgs each and can comfortably seat a classroom of 30 learners. The desks look and feel like wood, however, they are made of recycled plastic.
“It is estimated that throughout South Africa, there is a shortage of approximately 300 000 school desks. This is why we are so proud to be making this donation.”
“These desks meet a real need within the schools, but also demonstrate the importance of sustainable waste management, while highlighting the great value that exists in so – called ‘waste’ materials within a circular economy.” – Chandru Wadhwani, Joint Managing Director for Extrupet.
PETCO believes that the key to changing the views of waste management and recycling starts with children.
“We are thrilled to support this initiative as we believe informed, inspired, and empowered youth who learn to deal with waste properly today, will help secure a more sustainable future for South Africa tomorrow.” – Janine Basson, Stakeholder Relations Manager for PETCO
Extrupet is challenging corporate companies in SA to donate these desks to schools in need.
‘Other corporates can make a real and practical contribution to our children’s education and our transition on to a circular economy in South Africa by simply donating desks like these to schools. Thus, we challenge Corporate South Africa to match or exceed these donations’. – Chandru Wadhwani, Joint Managing Director for Extrupet.

Dear Chandru Wadhwani, Joint Managing Director for Extrupet.
I am thankful that you and your company are involved and challenge other companies in getting involved with getting recycled desks to schools that need. One of my motto’s is Knowledge is Power.
We have started a Literacy programme at Lake Farm Centre - Residential Centre for Intellectually Challenged Adults and named it RTR - Reach Teach Read. After almost two years of teaching two classes out of one workshop room we moved to different workshops each to finally move to a ‘house- workshop’ that has three classrooms - one room takes +/- 10 - 12 residents, the other two rooms takes +/- 8 - 10 residents. The ideal set up is a U-Shape set-up of desks. We have ‘make-shift’ tables n the one room and a table from one of the teachers home for the other classroom. We teach the Phono-Graphix method to our residents. Phono-Graphix is a straightforward reading method, which was developed by Carmen and Geoffrey McGuinness in 1993, at the Read America clinic in Orlando. It takes the sounds of the English language - and teaches the various sound-pictures (letters) that represent those sounds in careful stages. We have started with a Afrikaans Phono-Graphix class a few months ago which has had amazing results. We also have art classes which are extremely well attended.
The vision of the REACH-TEACH-READ Programme is to promote independence, structure and life skills whilst developing healthy attitudes and self-esteem.

If you find it in your heart to donate a few desks to our ‘school’ we would appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts as our students (residents) are like sponges who want to absorb all the knowledge they can and if you are in the Port Elizabeth area and would like to pop in to visit with one of the classes, feel free to contact me Maggie Moore. You will be amazed at the progress that our students (residents) have made.
