The story of food exhibition – World Design Capital Project 12 May – 12 October 14

May 12, 2014

R15 – R30

Food is a big part of our daily lives but we barely give a second thought to where it came from and how it got to us.

Looking at the story of food from then to now from a design perspective, the Cape Craft and Design Institute will be curating an exhibition that explores how our relationship with food has changed over the years, in many parts thanks to new technologies in processing and packaging.  The exhibition runs from 12 May – 12 October.

As design and technology began finding more and more solutions to problems revolving around the preservation, storage and packaging of food, problems such as waste and inequality developed.

The way we relate to and get our food today is very different from what is was 50 or more years ago. How did this change? What were the design solutions that allowed it to change? The exhibition, set to run at the Good Hope Gallery and the Castle of Good Hope from mid-May to mid-October 2014, tells the story of food through these objects that changed the way we get our food.

These objects originally served an essential purpose and are on their own quite beautiful, but as our world population has increased and our demands on food have changed, so they have become objects that alongside their usefulness, are causing harm to our environment and economic wellbeing.

While the exhibition educates us on the challenges we face in terms of food and an ever-increasing world population, it also asks us to consider what new solutions we can come up with for today’s challenges. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Cape Craft and Design Institute and the Iziko Museums of South Africa.
