Are you looking for yummy goats milk cheese and other farm products for your family? Let me tell you about Arbeidsgenot, a farm near Lutzville – or let Malinda speak for herself:
At Arbeidsgenot we are moving into winter, with milk production from our goats dropping dramatically, as is natural for them in winter.
Winter milk is creamier than summer milk resulting in a richer, smoother cheese, giving the cheese its “winter” character. One of the things we love about our farm is that we can allow our goats to just be natural. We don’t force them by feeding them a too high protein diets which, result in disease, because we want to push up their production.
Winter simply means less milk and less cheese and that’s fine by us. Also, less productive goats. That’s why Nefertiti (see picture) who is an older goat, still has a valid place on our farm. In a factory setup she would have been slaughtered a couple of years ago. Here we value her for her contribution and her great personality.
We now have a new partner, Devon Munnik, on board as well. Devon came to do volunteering on our smallholding and liked it so much, we couldn’t get him to leave again! He has decided to go into free range broilers and free range petit poussins (spring chicken).
Unlike factory raised chicken, Dev’s chicks are exposed to natural light every day as they spend their whole day outside, getting to scrub the way chickens naturally do. His chickens also have plenty of space and can run and move around freely. See the picture of Devon’s chicks in their spacious run.
On the 18th June we will be able to send cheese down to Cape Town and also some spring chicken!
At the moment we have the following cheese in stock:
- Cheddar @ R200 per kilogram
- Cottage @ R40 per 500 gram tub
- Feta @ R50 per 500 gram tub
- Chilli Cheddar (cheddar with dried, crushed chillies – absolutely delicious) @ R200 per kilogram
- Mozzarella (limited supply, so don’t miss out) @ R150 a kilogram
- 50 petit poussin (free range spring chicken) @ R40 per kilogram.
- Chickens average about 500 to 600 grams per chicken.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
