where it all began
Re-launched in 2002, the programme is a joint initiative of the IWMSA and the Department of Environmental, Agriculture and Rural Development. The project aims to create awareness about waste and the importance of making sure it is avoided, reused, recycled and where necessary correctly disposed of.
Chairman of the IWMSA KZN Branch, Pat Reddy, said that responsible waste management provides not only financial benefits in terms of reuse and recycling, but it also results in health and environmental benefits.
“We view all entrants as winners. We hope they would gain more from this experience and work hard to improve their waste management practices,” Reddy indicated.
Participation in the competition was free to companies in the fields including Chemical Manufacturing, General Manufacturing and Service Industry.
A team of judges comprising of IWMSA members and officials from the Department of Agriculture audited each entrant in seven categories and the overall score determined each entrant’s certificate.
