Tafelsig Christmas Lunch

Christmas is for most of us, certainly the Green Times readers, NOT about buying more stuff you don’t need, putting more pressure on the planet… more blind following of the capitalist god that put in the pickle. No, it’s a time we look around and see where we can help,
There are hungry people in Tafelsig. Since Covid broke out and escalated poverty in one of Cape Town’s poorest neighbourhoods, Joanie Fredericks and her Tafelsig Mitchells Plain CAN NPC have been providing 10 000 warm cooked meals per day the first year with 31 kitchens.
As donations decreased they were forced to have less kitchens and are currently on 11 kitchens and 6000 per day.
“The needs are still the same with rising unemployment so we are forced to up our numbers with the remaining kitchens to feed as many people as possible,” she says.
We know that feeding schemes and soup kitchens provide mostly carbs and veg, thanks to the support of our and other caring communities. The hope is now that a Christmas Lunch will be provided that includes meat. That is their dream. Altogether 350 children and 100 adult people from the Tafelsig community will be served a 3 course meal on Thursday 23 December. That is if we all pitch in.
“This month we would love to treat our people to a nice piece of meat on their plate. I’m sure you know how welcome meat will be after such a long time,” says Joannie.
They are asking for help to make this special project possible and will share the success of the event with us. Green Times will publish a follow up story.
It doesn’t matter if you are a vegetarian or vegan, it’s about the hearts’ desires as well as nutritional needs of folks who deserve a treat. How about helping us make this possible?
