Slowly transforming your life and work to one that considers the earth’s carrying capacity and future generations in everything you do is a life-long journey of innovation, care and creativity. Every small idea and implementation is valuable and important to share so others can follow. That’s why we at the Green Times love telling the stories of new solutions to the challenges we all encounter.
An exciting one I found this week speaks to my concern about our water crisis. Here in the Cape Town area we’ve had a very dry winter. Lovely mild beach walking days are great to enjoy, but what will the consequences be? Rainfall is down to less than a quarter of the normal average for this time of the year. What is this doing to the farming industry? We will experience that in food prices during the coming season. I even had to water my veggie garden in the middle of the winter last week. I donâ’t remember ever having to do that before.
So I’m happy to introduce you to a new water saving gadget for families with babies or small children. From the UK comes a special BabyDam, imported by Green Apple Procurement Solutions. This is a water barrier, like a dam wall, which turns your bath into a small baby dam - saving you up to 20 litres of water per bath. Multiply that by 365 days and you have your savings per year. Less hot water means saving energy too, as hot water makes up easily 50% of our domestic water consumption.
Small changes go a long way
‘Small household changes can make substantial differences to sustainable living,’ says Tracy Otte of Green Apple Procurement Solutions. ‘Given the current environmental and economic climate, we were looking for a unique and cost effective answer to assist households coping with increased water restrictions and subsequent water tariff increases.’
The BabyDam Water Barrier was 100% safety tested and is a highly durable, flexible and impermeable barrier that fits into every bathtub, immediately creating a safe space for any infant to be bathed in. Every BabyDam is clearly marked for the recommended maximum water depth, with a safety porthole. You can even bath two infants at the same time, as it allows for their respective appropriate water depth simultaneously.
The BabyDam was launched in May at the Mama Magic Expo at the Dome. They have already won a number of green awards! The Most Green Product award at the Baba Indaba Expo in Midrand, and more recently the Certificate of Excellence for the Green Product at the Nasrec Baba Indaba. It will also be at the other Baby Expos nationwide throughout the rest of the year.
Here is their green tip
BabyDam recently presented the Green Tip of the Day on Radio 702 - download the mp3 here.
Their office is based in Bryanston, Gauteng, where you can see an illustration of the product, if you are in the area. Although BabyDam is not currently available in retail stores yet, you can purchase one directly from them at the reduced price of R300.00. They will send the product to you. Or, if you are the first Green Times reader to call or write to Tracy, you may be the lucky winner of one BabyDam for FREE! If you do, please take a photograph of your little one in the bath and send it to us:)
This is also a cool product for a baby shower. If you’re in our neck of the woods you can see them at the Baby Expo at the CTICC from 5 to 7 August.
