Cycling as bare as we dare for the third time

Since 2004, cities across the world have co-created and shared the experience of the world’s largest naked event that seeks to create environmental awareness through clean initiatives such as cycling. This event is called The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) and this year Cape Town joins a host of other cities for the third time since 2010!

This worldwide-led bike ride underpins global issues of relevance to the environment, global warming, carbon emissions, and body awareness. It is a peaceful, imaginative and fun protest against oil dependency and car culture.

The purpose of the bike ride is to create awareness of the many benefits (human’s environmental impact, body health, universal solidarity) of cycling. Cycling as bare as one dares, is symbolic of the vulnerability of cyclists in traffic. For these reasons, the Cape Town Naked Bike Ride supports efforts to address this challenge by creating awareness and promoting discussion.

CT’s footprint a disgrace

Cape Town’s drivers need to recognise and respect cyclists and most importantly co-create a safe road-user culture based on respect and understanding. Cape Town’s carbon footprint remains unacceptably high; Capetonians emit more greenhouse gases than residents of London, New York or Tokyo.

It is vital to recognise our impact on the environment and begin forging pathways to a healthier city. We can directly address these challenges by calling for more non-motorised transport awareness campaigns, more cycle lanes in Cape Town and by working closely with Metrorail to accommodate cycle commuters on trains.

What to wear? Come “As Bare As You Dare”… How bare is that? As bare as you dare! It’s all up to you. The ride is a safe and unified community celebration, so decide what you are comfortable with and join in.

The event is open to everyone, young and old, fit and not so fit; the idea is to engage the public and make a statement. Participants paint their bodies and decorate their bikes with messages of protest or beautiful designs to complement their varied forms and diversity.
